Instructora Señora Raquel,
B.A. Romance Languages, UGA

Classes Held in Columbus, GA

Say Hola to Spanish!

¿Dónde está Señora Raquel? — español en acción

From these enriching experiences, I hope to bring back a wealth of knowledge to share with my students and to share the experience in future summer trips to France, Colombia, or Canada.

el Minuto de Dios y la Fundación Universitaria de Popayán
Bogotá y Popayán, Colombia

Through connections at Columbus State University, I have been invited back for the second year in a row to la Semana Empresarial at Minuto de Dios in Bogotá and to visit la Fundación Universitaria de Popayán. In Bogotá, I was a conferencista (conference presenter) who gave two talks to groups of day and night university students. The topic of the year was Alliances and Networks, and I talked about those in the educational sector.

Cool places I visited:
Patacones, Donatello, La Pizzarra, La Cosecha, El Corral, Cuaresnor, Margarita's (Mexican in Colombia?!), Kokoriko.

3er. Congreso internacional, Emprendimiento, Un reto para el Desarrollo Local y Regional
Bogotá, Cali, y Popayán, Colombia

Thanks to my involvement in the Summer Immersion Excursion at CSU, I have been invited by Dr. Infante to visit Uniminuto for 2 weeks this November. I have been working from August until October to confirm this trip. I have been invited as a special guest of Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios (Uniminuto) in Colombia to visit their Bogotá and Popayán campuses and to serve as a liaison to visiting professor Dr. Mike Daniels from CSU. I have also been invited to give at least one talk about the alliance between CSU and Uniminuto to a crowd of up to 1,100 alumni IN SPANISH!!! It’s all very exciting to me, as you can imagine.

I plan to do a variety of personal and business endeavors while there: tourism, business conference, interpreting, translating, public speaking in Spanish, negotiating future alliances between Uniminuto and CSU, and of course some Latin dancing. Uniminuto has been gracious enough to cover all of my expenses for meals, hotels, and internal air tickets Bogotá-Cali-Bogotá.

I am extremely excited about this opportunity to extend my abilities in business and in Spanish, so try not to cry too much about missing 2 classes with me on November 3rd and 10th!

Summer Immersion Excursion
Continuing Education - Columbus State University

Thanks to my new job at CSU as Program Coordinator of the English Language Institute, I was given the opportunity to lead a group of 34 Chinese delegates from
Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) and 11 Colombian delegates from Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios (Uniminuto). This was both a pleasure and an honor to me for all the experience I was able to gain in international relations while sharing the many beauties of my hometown with them. Of particular note is the business relationship that was forged between myself and the leader of the Colombian group, Dr. Rudolf Infante Vasquez. He will be guest speaking in some of our classes this fall live on Skype.

New Job -
English Language Institute
Columbus State University

As the new Program Coordinator of this program, I am afforded so many wonderful opportunities to interact with people from all walks of life and all parts of the world, but obviously my favorite interactions have to do with those people who speak either Spanish or French natively. This opportunity has allowed me to continue to keep my language comprehension and speaking abilities fresh and improving. If you don't use it, you lose it!

Visita a mis amigos - la familia Vivas
Bogotá, Colombia

When I worked teaching English as a Second Language to a group of Colombian children a few summers ago, I was fortunate enough to befriend the Vivas family. Now I have been invited to visit them in their home in Colombia. I will be gone the entire week of Thanksgiving (not celebrated in Colombia). I am planning to take a recipe book collected from my students that showcases traditional, American-Southern cuisine, and I will also take any books, music, etc. that you would like to contribute to the cultural buffet.

In my capacity as the Program Coordinator for the English Language Institute, I may also have the opportunity to appear on television in Colombia to talk about the English program. I'll tell you all about it when I get back.

Private ESL Group Lessons
la Casa de Señora Raquel

A group of Colombian generals here on assignment for 6 months with their families recently hired me to teach English to their children ages 10-18. I will be working with them right up until our Spanish classes begin again in the fall. Seeing the other side of the coin, so to speak, of second language acquisition from Spanish to English should be interesting. And when we break for lunch, I get to ask them all the questions about Colombia I've ever wanted to know and to practice my Spanish with them. Today they confirmed El Día de los Inocentes is still celebrated as a day for pranks and practical jokes as we learned in our intensive reading at the end of Spanish I+ last year.
